Azhar: More poor in Penang now
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang government's declaration that it had achieved zero hardcore poor status has been called into question following the release of the latest figures from the Statistics Department.
State opposition leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said the figures showed that the number of hardcore poor in Penang had actually risen from 494 families last year to 697 this year.
He said the statistics also showed that those earning less than RM720 a month had risen from 1,500 to 1,888.
He added that the urban poor and suburban poor, earning RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively, had also increased to 8,074.

"That is why I cannot understand how the state government is claiming credit that they have eradicated the hardcore poor problem in Penang," he said.
He said it was obvious the state government was merely interested in politicising its achievement instead of resolving the problem. [Readmore]
